Robbie's Story
Coming from a musical family, Robbie's love of music was clear from an early age. After many a creative session making his own musical instruments out of vacuum cleaner or cardboard tubing (!), by the age of 9, he had "graduated" to the trombone.
As a youngster, he played with local bands and brass ensembles, and a music scholarship to Clayesmore School and later a choral scholarship to Royal Holloway University (where he studied Maths), allowed him to indulge in his love for both brass playing and singing - both of which took him to perform in many countries around the world. Robbie also joined the ranks of the Wessex Youth Orchestra for a tour to Austria in 2012, which is where his ongoing links with "Wessex" were forged.
Robbie joined the Royal Corps of Army Music in 2015, serving in the Band of the Grenadier Guards (initially on trombone, later moving to Euphonium) and then the Coldstream Guards, performing official duties both home and abroad - representing the very best of British.

In January 2021, Robbie's journey took an unexpected turn, when he was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer, and despite many positive signs during his treatment, due to a complication in July 2023, he died suddenly at the age of 31, leaving behind him a wife, young son and family and friends.
Robbie's family says: "We believe it is important to support and encourage a child's musical development. Robbie was fortunate to be surrounded by music his whole life. With his parents running the Dorset Chamber Opera and later playing brass instruments alongside him, Robbie could appreciate the joy that music brings to everyone's lives. Robbie went too soon; he had so much more to give. Establishing a beginner brass group in his honour, is a way for him to "live on" and do as he planned - to help others on their musical journeys, whether they be long or short." |
