About the Wessex
Youth Music Wessex CIC - where the story of Youth Music in Wessex continues...
YMWes, an organisation dedicated to securing youth music in Wessex - continuing the Wessex ethos and traditions for generations of young musicians to come. Maintaining the familiar Wessex format, the Centre will continue to provide its high quality ensemble training and music theory classes for young musicians of all playing levels. With three main concerts each season, national music festival performances, international concert tours, a termly newsletter and the "legendary" Centre tuck shop, Youth Music Wessex not only offers high quality musical experiences, it makes them a lot of fun too.
The Centre’s largest and best known ensemble is its Youth Orchestra - the WYSO, directed by London musician Susanna Riddell. The orchestra's diary includes regular performances at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, and across the UK and on international tours. With specialist sectional training and connections with both the Bournemouth Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras, this orchestra is one of the most exciting and successful regional youth orchestras of today.
YMWes' Youth Chamber Orchestra, is a group of 35 or so young musicians who come together for one-off performances of chamber repertoire. And whilst the Youth and Youth Chamber Orchestras offer access to a wide range of musical training and experiences for the YMWes’s more advanced musicians, the Wessex Ensembles remain equally important. They provide vital training for our younger musicians in both the foundation and intermediate stages of their musical education. There are two string orchestras and two concert wind bands, children's choir, recorder classes, one-to-one instrumental lessons and this ever expanding range of Saturday morning activities is complimented by music theory classes, covering the necessary knowledge of grades 1-5 ABRSM Music Theory.
And thanks to the continued efforts of the volunteers and parent helpers who run the Centre tuck shop, assist with fundraising or simply become the “movers and shifters”, Saturday mornings at Youth Music Wessex are busy, noisy, full of energy and laughter. We’re very proud of our family-friendly atmosphere.
