Developing strong listening skills is integral to music making and instrumental study. Young musicians generally only come across aural training when they are preparing for a music exam - whilst learning their pieces, scales and building their sight-reading skills, they're also asked to clap back rhythms, identify time signatures, sing back melodies and chat about music structure, style and identify chords and cadences! But the skills required to answer these questions carry a greater value than being solely an element of the graded music exam.
As stated on the ABRSM website: Good aural skills enable a young musician to "assess their own sound, balance with others, keep in time, and play with a sense of rhythm and pulse". They also help a musician to "play in tune, develop a musical memory and spot mistakes. Singing both silently and out loud is one of the best ways to develop a musical ear".
With so much else to prepare for an exam performance, it can leave little time in instrumental lessons to focus on aural training, so Youth Music Wessex would like to help, by offering Saturday morning aural training classes here at YMWes, leaving more time in instrumental lessons to focus on the other exam elements.
Using an online booking system, you'll be able to choose which weeks you'd like to attend and sign up and pay as you go - we recommend attending at least 4 classes throughout the term, ensuring familiarity and preparedness. Why not start some lessons this term, in preparation for next?
