Susanna Riddell - AGSM LTCL - Director - Youth Music Wessex and Wessex Youth Symphony Orchestra
Like most professional musicians, Susanna has fond memories of her time in youth orchestra and this has fired her enthusiasm to pass-it-forward to all young players, at all levels. Studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama with renowned cellist and professor Raphael Wallfisch, Susanna has worked on the international orchestral stage for more than 25 years as cellist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Combining additional freelance work with the London Symphony, Philharmonia, City of Birmingham Symphony and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras, Susanna has also appeared as Principal Cellist with the London Philharmonic and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras and Camerata Tchaikovsky. Her concerto performances include those of Dvorak and Haydn. |
Having worked for many years with her conducting mentor Vladimir Jurowski, Susanna brings to the podium, her experience and knowledge of working in the orchestral profession; performing with world-class conductors and soloists, in the some of the most notable concert venues across the world, as well as offering insights into international touring, recording work including for TV and film (including soundtracks for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit, Iron Man, Elysium, Now You See Me, Hugo), and perhaps most importantly, quite simply - how to be professional; an invaluable lesson for all youngsters to use in whatever career they choose to pursue.
Aside from her work with Wessex, Susanna has worked as guest conductor with the Royal Holloway University London Symphony Orchestra, two seasons as conductor of the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra, and as guest conductor of Kew Sinfonia, Surrey Mozart Players, Kingston Philharmonic and Magna Sinfonia.
Susanna is also project lead for the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Junior Artist Scheme's "Overture" - introductory projects for young musicians, offering orchestral training and an insight into the world of orchestral playing. And on behalf of the LPO Education department, Susanna has led conductor training days for County Music Service staff across the UK.
Her teaching positions include Cello Mentor for the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Junior Artist Scheme, Cello teacher/coach for International Summer Music Masterclasses - based in Poland, visiting teacher positions at Millfield School - Somerset and Cheltenham Ladies College, Cheltenham, and she continues to run her private teaching practice from home, as well.
